Baroque

The word Baroque can be traced back to a Portugese word barocco, which means an unusually, strangely shaped pearl.

Exaggeration and violence belong to the Baroque, but rich picturesqueness joy of life and the power of the total conception too.

Baroque in Italy

Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680) a sculptor and an architect, built among other things the lovely colonade around the square near Saint Peter´s and the tabernacle of the high altar, which got its gold to its golden spiral pillars from the cupola of the most beautiful antique building, Pantheon in Rome.

Some of Bernini´s works, such as Apollo and Dafne -group, already have the magnificence of rococo. More Bernini´s works.
